About Us
History
We aim at inspiring our students to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more in their respective journeys of life.
Since its inception in 2003, the FKL team has tirelessly run the Fregenet School and raised awareness about the plight of underprivileged Ethiopian children. Our commitment to improving their lives and offering hope for their future led to the opening of Fregenet School in 2004 with 30 students.
We carefully selected the school’s location based on a needs assessment. We spotted the school at a locality where widespread poverty rampant in the area. Through dedicated staff, volunteers, and generous donors, we gained recognition from Ethiopian authorities and expanded our staff and student body beyond our initial expectations.
So far, we have exceeded our best expectations. But we are planning for more. Currently and at this nascent stage, the school provides the following services to children it supports absolutely free of any charge.
Achievements
- FKL had supported 500+ students from economically disadvantaged families, enabling them to progress in their education.
- FKL established a community library with free internet access, stocked with books, educational materials, and computers for the local community.
- FKL designed and built the Fregenet Danbi KG and Primary School in Bishoftu, 50 km East of Addis Ababa in 2022. The completed school building has been handed over to the government school authorities in Bishoftu, Eastern Shewa.
- FKL has been granted a plot of land of 1779 m2 by Addis Ababa City Administration for an upcoming school expansion project.
- On the newly acquired plot, a new compound for kg has been built and inaugurated. It is functioning since the February 2024.
- FKL has a dedicated team including a director, teachers, meal preparation staff and other staff members supporting its programs.
- The organization is governed by a board of 7 members. Members actively engage in FKL's initiatives through various committees.
- At the apex of FKL organization is the “Members Assembly”. The members are dedicated individuals from all walks of life propping up the programs of FKL through direct participation in various committees, raising funds and ensuring that FKL is functioning as prescribed by the statutes.
- The Board is elected by the General Assembly of the members.
- A new FKL primary school building has been designed and is being reviewed by professionals and education authorities.
